Train: First vs second class

May someone please elaborate what are the main differences between these 2 classes for train in China, besides the price?

I wish to find out this, as per my experience, travelling in a 1st class and 2nd class train in Europe was somewhat similar with not too great a ';difference'; in the seating!

Any designated coach for non smokers for trains in China?

There are hard and soft seat and hard and soft sleeper in China.

Seating varies by the train, not just the class, so hard seat can be pretty nice on an express train and crowded and less comfortable on a slow train.

For sleepers, hard seat has six bunks in an open alcove, while soft sleeper has four bunks in an enclosed room. I actually prefer hard sleeper, as it feels less claustrophobic to me.

I presume you mean 1st-class and 2nd-class in the D trains? These are the only trains that have those classes, the rest are called by different names, a result of the ';classless'; Communist ideology.

No non-smoking carriages for Chinese trains. However smoking is generally not permitted in train carriages anyway, only in the space adjoining the carriages.

1st-class had a bit more legroom, and 2 seats on each side of the aisle. 2nd-class has 2 seats or 3 seats on either side of the aisle.

I%26#39;ll also email you some photos of the 1st-class and 2nd-class carriages on the D trains.
