Beijing University

Hi all. Is there anything to do at or around Beijing University? My friend and I want to go check it out along with the Summer Palace and I%26#39;m wondering if it%26#39;s doable. Also, is Beihai park somewhere we could spend an entire day? I%26#39;ve included my itinerary below. Thanks!

Sunday-WFJ market and Salsa near Luftsana

Monday-Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City

Tuesday-Great Wall of China

Wednesday- Hutongs, Li Qun roast duck, Dazhalan

Thursday-Beijing University and Summer Palace

Friday- Beihai Park

Beijing University

First, you have to get onto campus! There%26#39;s not that much to see, though it is a large and pleasant campus.

There is a Sackler Museum on campus with some artifacts, so you can get on campus by making advance arrangements to see that. Once on campus, you could look around some of the old buildings and walk around Wuming (no name) lake.

Other than the OLD summer palace ruins (Yuanmingyuan, there%26#39;s not much to do in the university area, though the big electronics and book markets aren%26#39;t far from there. Also, there are lots of good, cheap restaurants near the university.

Yuanmingyuan is worthwhile (mainly the ruins--no need to explore the entire park, which is huge. The palace is in ruins because it was burned down by European and American troops and mercenaries, just so you know.

Beijing University

Get on campus? So it%26#39;s not open to visitors?

you donnot need to spend whole day to visit Beihai park. It is pretty small.

Beijing University is NOT open to visitors, but the museum is, so you can get onto campus to see the museum.

There are some obvious omissions on this itinerary. The Temple of Heaven and the Yonghegong Lamasary.

Beihai is nice, but not essential. The hutongs you are most likely to visit are just north of Beihai, so it makes sense to combine those on the same day.

Well, I%26#39;ve not encountered any problems on the couple of times I%26#39;ve gone inside Peking University. Maybe because I look like just any Chinese student?

No problem combining Peking University and Summer Palace.

No, you don%26#39;t need an entire day for Beihai Park.

Why aren%26#39;t you going to Temple of Heaven or Yonghegong Lamasery?

We%26#39;re trying to keep things pretty chill and spend time strolling and getting a feel for the city. I%26#39;ve done cities before where I was running around on a schedule and it was nice to see things, but you didn%26#39;t take time to sit or talk to people.

Are Temple of Heaven and the Lamasery must-sees? If so, maybe we can see them along with Beihai.

Oh ok...I see...so Beihai fits well with the hutongs. Temple of Heaven on its own day...

You can fit the Lamasary in after any day you have a little more time in the afternoon.

If you want to sit and talk to people, I think the Temple of Heaven is THE place to go. You have to go see the Altar of Good Harvests, but then just spend time in the park, where people are airing their birds, playing musical instruments, singing, dancing, doing Tai Chi, etc.

Your itinerary is not too rushed at all. You don%26#39;t need to overplan, either. If you have time and energy on Monday, you could continue on to Beihai Park, the Lamasary or the Hutongs. If not, you might have time to do some of those things go on Wednesday.

I agree with the above information.

For Beijing University, one of my friends is doing her Dr degree there. It a better choice for lecture than for sightseeing. it used to be a garden and beautiful.

It has the best libary in China, other two are Chinese Academy of Socail Sciemce amd National libery.

But only the last one is open to foreigner.
