Suzhou or no

I am going to Hong Kong and Beijing. I want to visit a third very different city. I am leaning toward Suzhou, but I am looking for other suggestions.

Suzhou or no

To specify, I want to visit a third city in China.

Suzhou or no

What are you looking for, exactly? Eg what are you looking to see, what experiences are you after?

If you will visit shanghai, you should add Suzhou onto your list.

I%26#39;m writing this from an internet cafe in Suzhou. My home is Portland, OR, and I%26#39;ve been in China for a little over two weeks, mainly wenzhou. On a previous trip to China I spent time in Beijing and Shanghai. Suzhou is a much smaller city, and has a significantly slower pace than either Beijing or Shanghai. However, it%26#39;s not amazingly beautiful, and isn%26#39;t necessarily outstanding in any particular way other than the pace. So far, I%26#39;ve spent time seeing the parks and temples, and have simply enjoyed meandering through the streets eating interesting street food, and observing the daily routines of the town. I %26#39;m finding that it%26#39;s a good town in which to sit under a tree and read a book and get away from the chaos of the bigger cities. There%26#39;s till crazy traffic, honking horns and lively markets, just on a smaller scale. Suzhou is an hour train ride from Shanghai, so it%26#39;s very, very easy to get here.

Another option worth considering is Hanzhou. It%26#39;s a little farther from Shanghai, but not much. I%26#39;ve haven%26#39;t been there yet, but I%26#39;m told it%26#39;s beautiful. I%26#39;m headed there next weekend. Otherwise, my mother has been to Xian and loved it, and Kunming I%26#39;ve heard is also interesting. There%26#39;s always Lhasa, Tibet, but it%26#39;s difficult to get there, and at 12,000 ft it will take a while to become acclimated.

Hopefully this helped a little. Have a great trip wherever you go.

We%26#39;ve just come back from China and our itinerary was Shanghai - Suzhou - Huangshan - Hangzhou - Shanghai (11 days). I preferred Hangzhou to Suzhou. In Suzhou there are some lovely Chinese gardens, but these are hidden away behind walls and you pay to get in. The gardens in Hangzhou are also beautiful (less formal) and open to all giving Hangzhou a more attractive look as a city. The restaurants we found in Hangzhou were better too and overall it felt less like a tourist trap.

Another suggestion for a third very different city is Huangshan (Tunxi) a very small city near the yellow mountain scenic area with some very picturesque villages nearby (where parts of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was filmed). Tunxi does have a domestic airport and is on a direct sleeper train from Shanghai.

Hi Suzhouor popularly known as Venice of the East or Hanzhou Heavenly paradise on Earth?Which 1?Both has its unique beauty. It just depends on what suits yr taste.Suzhou is deeply enriched in History with unique canals running thru the city with rich old mansions.Thats its specialities.n also theres the grand buddhist temple.Over at Hangzhou theres the efferverscent picturusque West lake or Xihu with the boat ride nof cos the many beautiful pagodas n monasteries some can be seen from the west lake. The whole city is well landscape n its natural contour of the city is beautiful also not mentioning the tea plantation! The city is bigger in size n more well strutured with good roads .Tourists can rent bicycles n ride around. It really feels like the city is like a huge tourist resort.Food is good with many choices. Also u can catch the cultural show at the Songdynasty Village.Very nice show not to be missed.U feel more relaxed there but sometime Xihu can be very congested with tourists .I think if u want a more relaxed atmosphere Hangzhou i a better choice, but again alas!Suzhou is also nice....

how much is the entrance ticket for Song Dynasty shows?

If im not mistaken the show costs RMB200 / person. Its definitely worth wtching.I can remember a similar show that is as good is at Shenzhen(Windows of the World)but its more expensive there cost 600Rmb but its longer n in 2 parts. The show at Song dynasty is of slightly smaller scale but believe me u wont get this over in KL or NY.The costumes ,choreography n history r outstanding.

I have been to Suzhou and i have been to Venice, and Suzhou is no Venice. If you spend a lot of time in China then Suzhou should be on your list. But if you come to China one time and only have so many days then go to Yangshuo for something different (more countryside rather than big cities). LiJiang is also interesting but more difficult to travel to (as you need to make a connection in Kunming, it takes nearly a whole day to get there, and another one to get out)
