One Day in Hong Kong

My husband and I have one full day in Hong Kong. Can someone help me plan the day? We are staying at the Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel, and would like to see some of the area. I don%26#39;t think my husband wants to do too much ';shopping'; because we will be coming from Shenzhen before and will have already gone to the Lowu shopping center and they should probably be enough for him...haha. I do know that I would like to visit the Peak and Stanley Market. (well maybe a bit more shopping...) How do I incorporate these into the day. Bus??? Taxi?? Would I try to do the Peak first, and then Stanley Market? Can you suggest other things to see? Where would we do lunch? Would it be better to head back to the hotel and maybe plan a sunset cruise for dinner?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Colleen

One Day in Hong Kong

i wouldnt recommend stanley if you only have 1 day.

the area of your hotel (tsim sha tsui) has a great hong kong feel than stanley in my opinion.

id spend the day the early portion of the day in canton road, nathan road, the area of your hotel. around 4pm, make your way to the nearest MTR and take it to Central. from central you can walk or take the bus to the peak tram terminus. you can drop by central, causeway bay or back to tsim sha tsui (for the avenue of stars) after visiting the peak to end the day.

One Day in Hong Kong

hey collen,

best way to travel in HK is on the MTR (underground), its cheap, quick and very clean and well set out, you can travel to anywhere in HK on it

i was like you first time i went, i wanted to do so much but had little time, however i managed to get quite a bit done

1. your hotel i believe is almost at the terminal for the star ferry crossing from kowloon(side you are on), to hong kong island, think it costs about 2HKD and takes 10 minutes each way, but i recommend it, the view is unreal when you get out and look across the bay

2. you know already about the peak i believe, this is on HK island side, and if you go at night 8PM (i think) there is the laser show, well worth seeing

3. i dont know if you have time, but go to the night race meeting if its on when your there

4. you mentioned stanley market for shopping...i cant comment as i didnt go here, however on kowloon side a few MTR stops from you is Temple street market, which is a night market really , satrts mid afternoon, but this is quite a nice market with loads of cheap stuff

eating, loads of places to eat, i always like to get out of the hotels and eat locally when im away. The seafood is unbelievable and reasonably prices...if the hairy crabs are in season try them, they are excellent. Lobster is also very good as well as some local fish

hope you have a great time, and hope this helps a little

thanks

gareth

p.s if you want a few beers in the evening outside the hotel, wanchai is the area on Hong Kong Island side, by the way i never said , hong kong is very safe, i cant wait to get back there in a month myself!!! :-)

Thanks Gazzz. Much appreciated. What is a night race? Also, we are arriving around dinner time, maybe 6 or 7 at night and will be tired. Can you recommend somewhere close to the hotel for dinner?

hey colleen, sorry night race, i mean the horse racing, they hold it at night its a fantastic experience if you get the chance and dont feel tired.

for restaurant i would best say talk to the concierge at your hotel they will be able to you in the correct direction. I know the area your hotel is in, but not its specific location

hope you have a great time, although with only 1 day i think you%26#39;ll be desperate to get back in the near future and have a proper exploration around, its my favourite city in the entire world

Hi Colleen

I would suggest that you give Stanley a miss if you only have one day.

Seeing as you only have the one day, you may want to consider a guided tour. Check out www.discoverhongkong.com for further information.

I understand that you arrive in the early evening. Take yourself down to the Star Ferry area, on the Kowloon side (5 mins from your hotel) and enjoy the light show that takes place at 8:00 pm each night. It is spectacular - and free !

Hope this helps

Oh one other thing - horse racing at Happy Valley only takes place on Weds nights

That%26#39;s not true. www.hkjc.com/english/racing/fixture.asp
