Best place to have your eyeglass prescriptons filled?

I will be in Hong Kong July, 08. Would like to have some prescriptions filled with present glasses. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

The Lonely Planet guide book has a suggestion, which I presume has been sussed out. Apart from that I would tend to use large international chains. There are a number of ';opticians'; in Hong Kong whose work is not the best. It is best to be careful, as presumably if there%26#39;s anything wrong with the glasses you want be there to discuss this with the people who made them.

Thanks for your response.

Santafelarry,

We used Optical 88 which is a large chain located all over HK. We found them professional and they provided excellent customer services. We had 3 different subscriptions filled, contacts, and sunglasses and are very happy with the products. Don鈥檛 be afraid to negotiate a discount which made our purchase approx 50% less than Australia price.

Cheers

Can you give me an idea of what you paid for prescription sunglasses? Do you know if they do progressives?

Thanks

Colleen

As far as I know everyone does progressives. Had some done myself years ago. prices now not so sure but shouldn%26#39;t be much more than 1/2 of US price if that.

We used New Fei last week, because they appeared to be recommended a number of times in this forum. Located in the Mongkok area, it%26#39;s a sort of strange place that could be a bit off-putting at first glance, it%26#39;s more like a warehouse-showroom on the fourth floor of a building, very noisy with dozens of staff and includes a class 1 trained optometrist. They do transitional lenses as well. We found their prices compared to Australia, even after comparing equivalent medical benefit, were excellent but I guess It depends on your taste in frames etc. Made up 4 pairs including 2 transitionals in three hours. We called them from our hotel and they came and picked us up in one of their people-mover vans and dropped us back later.

Yes I have used New Fei twice and highly recommend. Good prices and lots of choice and very reliable. I will be going back. call them and they collect you from the metro.

You mentioned that you called them from your hotel. You don%26#39;t happen to have the telephone number?

Enter ';new fei'; in google and it%26#39;s the first result returned.

Prescription sunglasses prices vary from 200 - 50000 HKD, depending on choice of frame, lens brand+material, and prescription. It%26#39;s rather pointless to simply ask ';how much';.

Every opticial store does progressive. However it requires expert fitting. There are 4 official ';grades'; of optician/optometrist in HK.

Quality name brand lenses cost about the same in HK as those at Asian-owned optical stores in Richmond(vancouver) BC, which are about 30-50% cheaper than mainstream optical stores in Canada. Frames are cheaper in HK, if you bargain.
